Main Lesson is a two-hour block of time each school day dedicated to the central academic focus of the day. It begins with an activity. This might be reciting a poem, mental math, singing, or a movement activity. Teachers then engage their students with an in-depth review of what had been learned in the previous school day. This review anchors the experience of knowledge in all learners. Next, the teacher provides lively presentations, activities, discussions, and experiments of new material.

The lesson culminates with the Main Lesson book, created uniquely by each student as an account of their learning. In effect, students create their own textbooks. Compositions, science experiments, math equations, spelling rules, accounts of historical events, and the like are accompanied by the students’ artistic expressions of the lessons. The result is a beautiful collection of what the student has learned, but more importantly, we know when a student engages with material so deeply, the learning is solidly in place.
