Sustainability
Sustainability is a core principle at The Waldorf School of Garden City. At our campus in Garden City, NY, we operate our own greenhouse and garden, which provide produce to our cafeteria. Our New Hampshire Campus, Camp Glen Brook in New Hampshire, is a model of sustainability. Not only is the campus solar powered for all electricity, and using sustainable technology, but the 250-acre forest and biodynamic form acts as a carbon sink. The overall carbon footprint of Camp Glen Brook’s operations is negative 4,000 pounds, helping to clean the atmosphere and heal the planet.
Beginning in the earliest classes, students are brought into nature. Understanding our actions and their consequences for our planet are woven into the culture of the community. Students learn respect for all of earth’s creatures, the benefits of local food sources, biodynamic farming, and other aspects of sustainable living. Additionally, the School’s horticulture curriculum provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in hands-on learning about sustainable urban agriculture.
Earth Day is an all-school annual event when students work in small mixed-age groups to collaboratively nurture our campus and learn more about environmental sustainability. In 2024, News 12 Long Island visited WSGC to experience our Earth Day Celebration.
Since the 1940s, our School has been teaching students about work, responsibility, and sustainable living.
Camp Glen Brook in Marlborough, New Hampshire is the extension campus of The Waldorf School Garden City. At Glen Brook, we produce so much of what we use here to model a regenerative relationship with Earth. We harvest our own food from our farm, we harvest our own lumber from our forest, and now we will be producing our own energy with solar panels.
