1971 Waldorf Singers
It was over 35 years ago that Mr. George V. Rose and the Waldorf Singers took their first tour to Europe. The group left New York in June 1971 to give a series of concerts at Waldorf schools in Scotland, England, Germany and Austria. Dwight Webb '72 was one of the traveling singers. He recalls how the hand of friendship was extended to them by the many Waldorf schools they visited. The tour was a great success and inspired the second trip which took place in June 1981.

1981 Waldorf Singers In 1981 the itinerary included Scotland, England, Holland, Germany and Switzerland. A highlight of that tour was the visit to a Waldorf community in Borchen, Germany, which centered around a castle Schloss Hamborn. The prince whose family seat had been this castle, still lived there. He befriended the group and entertained them with fascinating anecdotes of his eventful life and family history. He enjoyed the singers’ concert so much that he followed them to the next venue to hear a repeat performance!

Another highlight of the tour was the concert at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland. The architecturally - unique complex, designed by Rudolf Steiner, is the center of the world-wide Anthroposophical Society. The final concert took place on the fourth of July where the group, on invitation, sang the American National Anthem, the first time this had been done in the Goetheanum.

1994 Waldorf Singers The third European tour departed for Europe in June 1994. This group sang their way through a number of beautiful Austrian and German cities. Next on the tour was Edinburgh, Scotland, which Mr. Rose says was the favorite city on all of the tours. The Scots were equally taken by the singers, according to a local review: “The Waldorf Singers are open, enthusiastic and refreshing, with marvelous musical abilities. They are a great credit to Waldorf Education and to America.” The tour ended in England. What a wonderful experience these tours have been for our students!
