Rites of Passage

Every student’s experience at the high school includes special “rites of passage” – adventures or challenges that support the growth of skills and confidence. Many of these events center around Camp Glen Brook, such as the physically demanding ropes course and the arduous climb to the summits of Mt. Washington or Mt. Monadnock, two of New England’s highest mountains.

Other challenges take the form of presentations and productions. As a culmination of their study of cultural geography, sophomores organize the annual Cultural Awareness Day. The plays presented by the tenth and twelfth grades are exciting milestones, and all students participate in them. For these intense and comprehensive experiences, students help to select the work to be performed and carry out all aspects of the production.

Every junior recites a memorized poem to an audience of faculty and students and every senior presents a formal fifteen-minute speech at a weekly assembly. The senior class as a whole plans a forum on a current issue twice a month and moderates the discussion. As a result of these experiences, students develop a high level of skill and confidence in standing and speaking before an audience.
