A Chronological Look at Our School History

1947
H.A.W. Myrin, 1960As a result of the dreams and vision of Dr. Hermann von Baravalle, with the support of Paul Dawson Eddy (President of Adelphi) and Dr. Franz Winkler (prominent local physician) and the financial support and generosity of H.A.W. Myrin and his wife, Mabel Pew Myrin, our school opens its Our Schooldoors as The Waldorf Demonstration School of Adelphi College.
The school's first Administrative Director is Betty Kendell.

John F. Gardner, 19751949
John F. Gardner becomes the Administrative Director.

1950
The wings presently housing the business office, preschool, primary grades and Bonner Hall are completed.

1956
The wings housing the gym, music, sculpting and woodworking studios, science lab, library and main office are completed. In that same year, the first eighth grade graduates with Alfred Tomlinson as their class teacher.

1958
The high school wing is completed.

1960
Dr. Franz WinklerThe first high school commencement takes place with Dr. Winkler as guest speaker.

1964
The Waldorf Institute for Liberal Education is started with John Gardner as its Director and Janice Kreitner as the Executive Secretary.

1965
Lee Lecraw is now instructing teachers and prospective teachers at the Waldorf Institute. Peter Curran, 1973The Waldorf Choral Society is established under the direction of George V. Rose.
Our school becomes the first Waldorf School to be accredited by the Middle Atlantic States Region of NAIS.
Peter Curran becomes Principal of the high school.

1967
The Waldorf Institute receives accreditation from Adelphi University to offer a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education for its graduates.
The first Literary and Gourmet Society Dinner is held in the high school.

1968
A new running track is installed around the athletic field.

1970
Mr. Myrin, a long-time friend and benefactor to the school passes away.
On the first National Earth Day, the school has a work day for its students, which leads to the establishment of the school’s student work program.

1971
The lower school grades under the guidance of Robert Weschler create the Nature Trail around the perimeter of the school grounds.
George Rose takes the Waldorf Singers on their first European Tour.
Dr. Winkler, special friend and supporter of our school passes away.

1972
Mabel Pew Myrin, a friend and financial supporter of our school passes away.
The work program at the school is expanded when the first class trip to Glen Brook takes place under the leadership of Peter Curran.

1973
A new addition is built onto the preschool wing to house our current art studioDavid A. Barten, 1974 and observatory.
Through the efforts and generosity of Peter Curran, the school acquires Camp Glen Brook and class trips to the New Hampshire 200 acre farm become a regular part of
the fall and spring programs.

1974
John F. Gardner retires from the position of Faculty Chairman and is succeeded by David Barten. With Mr. Curran now spending much of his time running Glen Brook, Andrew Leaf becomes the principal of the high school.

 

1977

Andrew Leaf becomes Faculty Chairman of the school.

 

 

1978
George RosePeter Curran becomes interim Faculty Chairman and George Rose becomes the high school Chairman.

 

1979
Elizabeth SchererThe school changes its name from The Waldorf School of Adelphi University to The Waldorf School of Garden City and now has its own Board of Trustees and Corporation.
Elizabeth Scherer becomes Faculty Chair.

1981
George Rose becomes Faculty Chairman.
The second Waldorf Singers tour of Europe takes place.

1982
Dr. George Russell is elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

James M. Madsen, 19871983
James Madsen becomes Chairman of the high school.
The first computer lab is created.
The school celebrates its 35th anniversary.

1984
The little gym/Eurythmy room is renovated and becomes Bonner Hall
thanks to the generosity of Florence Bonner.

1985
The first Parents’ Maintenance Weekend is organized.
Physical Education teacher, Laszlo Jurak represents the U.S. Olympic Committee in Cyprus during an exchange program for Olympic coaches.

Leonore Russell, 19901987
James Madsen becomes the Director of Camp Glen Brook. Leonore Russell takes over as high school Chair.

1989
The very challenging and fun ropes course makes its debut at Camp Glen Brook.

Marilyn D. Ruppart, 19941992
Marilyn Ruppart becomes Faculty Chair.
The preschool is expanded to include a three year old Nursery.

 

1994
A Strategic Plan for the school is developed through the joint efforts of faculty, trustees, parents and alumni.
The biology room is renovated into a life
science lab and named after Dr. George Russell.
A new state-of-the-art computer lab is created in the high school.

1995
William Jennings Roland Rothenbucherbecomes Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Charles Henderson becomes the school’s Administrative Director.
Roland Rothenbucher is named Faculty Chairman of the high school.

1996
The first Sports Award Night takes place, sponsored by the Parent Association.

1997
Our school celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The school establishes the College of Teachers and the Faculty Council, as its executive committee, led by a Faculty Chair who serves a one-year term.
The Parent Toddler Program begins its first year.

Susan Braun Smalley1998
Susan Braun becomes the school’s Administrator.
The track is upgraded with a new running surface.

1999
The Extended Day Program is established.
Through the generosity of Dr. Robert White and his son David White, Camp Glen Brook is given White Meadows, increasing the N.H. campus to 250 acres.

2000
The physics and chemistry labs are renovated and the chemistry lab is named for long-time science teacher, Al Tomlinson.

2003
The school celebrates its Inaugural Gala at the Milleridge Cottage in Jericho, N.Y.  Proceeds benefit the Scholarship and Endowment Fund.

2004
Executive Director of Development Scott A. Williams '85, along with John Miller and Kenneth I. Chenault '69 lead the school in a successful $2.1 million "Opening Worlds of Opportunity" capital campaign to renovate the library, increase the Scholarship & Endowment Fund, upgrade critical areas of the Garden City campus and refurbish the Glen Brook facilities.

2007
Twain Braden '88 becomes Director of Camp Glen Brook.  The school celebrates its 60th Anniversary Gala at the Millerdige Cottage in Jericho, N.Y.
